Cleaning Out a Coffee Pot

A clean coffee pot is a healthy coffee pot.

Coffee Pot

Maintaining a clean coffee pot is one of the easiest ways to ensure that you always get the best possible cup of coffee. During the brewing process, oils and other particulates are extracted from the ground coffee. These are the components which are essential in giving coffee its unique flavor, color and texture. As brewed coffee is allowed to maintain contact with a surface, these oils and other particulates will begin to deposit on the surface. Over time, these deposits begin to thicken and become noticeable as a familiar brown color. Depending on the type of brewing method this may happen in as little as one or two coffee pots.

Coffee Pot

Residual coffee deposits can build up on components such as carafes, pots, air-pots, French Press containers, thermoses and other type of vessels. These are typically the types of equipment which will be required to maintain contact with brewed coffee for extended periods of time. As the deposits begin to thicken, they can alter the flavor of the coffee, often for the worse. Maintaining a clean surface will ensure that you always taste the coffee you are currently brewing and maintaining clean surfaces are easy!

So what is a coffee deposit? It is essentially layers of oils and fine coffee built up on a surface. These are anchored to the surface by adhering to small imperfections on the surface of the coffee equipment. So with these two primary factors identified, we can choose how to clean the equipment. It is well known that soap or other mild detergents are excellent for breaking-down or "loosening" anything oily. That was the easy one. However, many people attack a stain or deposit with an abrasive such as steel-wool. However, this practice should be avoided because these abrasives will create additional surface imperfections for a stain to re-deposit. This will accelerate the formation of new coffee deposits on the surface and decrease the usable life of your coffee equipment.

The primary defense in preventing or delaying deposit build-up is to rinse your coffee pot with warm water after each use. This eliminates a large majority of the residue from being deposited between each brewing. However, overtime this method with not prevent a coffee deposit build-up and then other cleaning methods will be needed. Cleaning coffee pots is easy and one of the best ways to do it requires very little effort. Just heat the coffee pot with hot water, add a modest amount of soap or other mild detergent, agitate the soap and water, and then let it sit for an hour. After the hour is up, wipe the surfaces with a dish cloth (remember, no abrasives) and the surface will wipe clean. Rinse thoroughly with cold water several times to clean and remove all the detergent.

Some deposits are a little tougher, such as Lime, scale, or calcification. These types of deposits can still easily be removed with commonly available liquids. The most common is Vinegar and second would be Citric Acid, both commonly available at a grocery store. To use these, mix a ratio of 2:1 (water:vinegar) or a ratio of 4:1 (water:Citric Acid) hot water to solution. Let these stand for 10 minutes or longer in the coffee pot, rinse with water, wipe clean, and then thoroughly rinse again with cold water.

There are also several commercially available cleaners which can be located at various stores. Some of these are made specifically to remove coffee stains, others for calcareous deposits, but some of the best ones are for cleaning "beer" brewing equipment. Please ensure that you read, understand and follow the cleaning instructions on any of these, and always rinse thoroughly with cold water to remove any residual chemicals.

Finally, if you are a fan of more organic methods, you can clean your coffee pot using ice, water, lemon juice, and salt. Fill the coffee pot with crushed ice, add four tablespoons of lemon juice, a tablespoon of salt, agitate the solution to mix. Let the mixture stand for ten minutes and then stir the mixture for several minutes. Empty the mixture from the coffee pot, wipe down with a cloth and then rinse several times with cold water.

Coffee Pot Cleaning

Are you looking for ways to clean your coffee pot because you haven't cleaned it in a long time and just forgot about it? Well, you have come to the right place for cleaning that coffee pot! Follow the easy steps below and your pot will be looking brand new again!

Coffee Pot

Start by making a mixture of one part white vinegar, and two parts water. You should use this solution if you clean it regularly. If you haven't been keeping up with the cleaning of the coffee pot, you should use the next solution. Make a mixture that is half vinegar and half water instead. Next, you should put a filter inside the maker as you usually would. Then, pour the mixture that you made into the coffee maker where you would usually place water. You can then turn the maker on and let the entire mixture go through the machine. After it has run all the way through, you can then throw away the filter and the mixture. Next, let the coffee maker sit and cool down for about fifteen minutes while it is turned off.

Coffee Pot

Lastly, you should rinse the coffee pot. You should repeat all the steps a second time running cold water through the filter. This process will make sure all the water and the vinegar that you used is completely out of the machine. If you do not feel like running it through again, just smell the pot to see if there is vinegar and if there is no smell, then you will not need to repeat the steps a second time around.

How To Master Your French Press - Plunger Pot Coffee Maker

The French press produces a very rich, robust coffee. It is the next best brew to an Espresso. Using medium to coarse coffee grounds which when directly infused using slightly cooled boiling water, will create a great blend of aroma and flavor. The French press method is pre-warming the glass beaker with hot water, adding your preferred amount of coffee in the beaker, then adding some slightly cooled boiling water. The plunger cover is then replaced on the beaker. You should then allow the coffee to steep for about four to six minutes. Then you gently press the plunger lid down allowing it to pass through the suspended coffee. This will separate your finished coffee away from the grounds by pressing all the grounds to the bottom of the pot.

Coffee Pot

Advantages | Disadvantages of your French press

Coffee Pot

Advantages: Using this technique gives the richest body of coffee (excluding Espresso). The stop time is less, application of pressure is slight, water is hotter, and the ratio of water to coffee is greater. Grounds in this process (steeping) are just under the boiling point, which means no extra boiling or burning which will save the dark, delightful flavor and coffee aroma - with no bitterness. Also there is no paper filter to take away some of the coffee oils - which will help save your delicate aroma.

Disadvantages: The cooling down of the coffee before the steeping pressure has finished. If your coffee beans are ground too fine, it will be harder to press down the plunger lid because of the increased surface tension. And if you do not use the medium to coarse grind, you may have sediment at the bottom of our cup.

Bonus | Using the French press as a foamer to make froth.

Heat a cup of milk (using non-fat has best results) on the stove or in the microwave. Do not overheat; just heat it enough that you cannot put your finger into it. Pour the milk into a rinsed plunger pot. Pump the plunger in the pot for a few minutes and the milk will expand to three to four times its volume creating froth for your cappuccino and latte.

Espresso Coffee Pot is Also Known As Moka Pot

Contrary to what many people believe, there is actually no need to purchase an expensive espresso coffee machine such as a Delonghi coffee machine in order to make your own espresso. A moka coffee pot is a practical and reasonable alternative to an expensive, high quality espresso machine.

Coffee Pot

This is a stove top espresso coffee maker that works by brewing coffee through steam pressurized water. It is often otherwise called as an espresso coffee pot by some coffee drinkers. The espresso pot is commonly used in Europe, most likely since it was "born" there. This stove top brewer was first invented and patented by Alfonso Bialetti in 1933. Being the pioneer in developing the first Moka pot, Bialetti has become the number one brand of espresso maker over any other brand of coffee machines.

Coffee Pot

The Bialetti pot, also called the Moka Express, is the world's number one brewer with over 250 million units manufactured to date. It has revolutionized the way espresso coffee is prepared and is recognized by its trademark octagonal shape. Its shape has been patented worldwide and is an iconic design and displayed in modern industrial art museums such as the Science Museum in London. Being the top of its class, this Bialetti pot is in fact the most copied coffee maker and is a staple appliance in many households.

The reason for its popularity is because of its ease of use and affordability. The Moka pot comes in 6 different sizes - it is available in 1(2oz), 3 (6.5 oz), 6 (10 oz), 9 (18.5 oz), 12 (25 oz) and 18 (37 oz) cup sizes. All the espresso pots bear Bialetti's unique mark of "the little fellow with the mustache." The Bialetti Moka brewer is made of aluminum. Its original design was made from aluminum with bakelite handles. It consists of several parts.

There is a reservoir or a boiler where the water is poured in, a filter basket/funnel that holds the coffee grounds, a filter plate that fits the top part and a gasket or a rubber ring that holds the plate in place. To use the pot, water is first poured in the reservoir, usually up to the level of the steam valve. Then the filter basket or funnel is inserted and pour onto the coffee grounds into this filter basket. The gasket and the filter plate are then tightly screwed on the base. Finally, the Moka pot is placed over a stove top and heated until just before it starts to boil. Then the only thing left to do is to enjoy your freshly brewed cup of stove top espresso coffee.

The Quest for a Perfect Cup of Coffee

It is generally agreed that there are four basic elements critical to the perfect cup:

Water and Coffee Filters
Water & Coffee Filters

Element 1. Water:
Coffee is 98% water. Often overlooked, the quality of the water is as important as the quality of the coffee. A good rule of thumb is that if your water doesn’t taste good from the tap, it won’t taste any better in your coffee. That’s why Cuisinart has added a water filter to the Brew Central coffeemaker. The charcoal water filter removes chlorine, bad tastes and odors, for the purest cup of coffee every time.

Element 2. Coffee:
While the bulk of the liquid is water, all of the flavor should be from the coffee. To achieve the same great quality of coffee you receive at a coffee bar, you need to use the same quality beans. Buy the beans fresh and whole, only about a two weeks’ supply at a time for maximum freshness. Once the coffee bean is broken, its flavor degrades very quickly. If it is not practical to buy small supplies, we recommend you separate larger amounts of beans into one to two week portions immediately after purchase, and freeze them in airtight containers. The best way to maximize freshness is to minimize exposure to air, light and moisture. So, once removed from the freezer, beans should be maintained in a sealed container at room temperature, since damaging condensation occurs every time the beans are removed from the freezer or refrigerator. Note that some coffee experts advise against freezing dark-roast beans, because freezing can cause the oils to coagulate. Other experts disagree. We suggest you experiment and decide yourself.

The Perfect Cup of Coffee
The Perfect Cup of Coffee

Element 3. Grind:
The grind of the coffee is critical for proper flavor extraction. If the grind is too fine, over extraction and bitterness will result. Too fine a grind may also clog the filter. If the grind is too coarse, the water will pass through too quickly and the desired flavors will not be extracted. A medium-fine grind is recommended.

Element 4. Proportion:
The cups on the Cuisinart coffeemaker measure 5 ounces. Add the amount of ground coffee that corresponds to the number of cups being brewed. Many coffee bars and the Specialty Coffee Association of America recommend adding 2 rounded tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water. Some coffee manufactures recommend using 1 tablespoon per cup. Cuisinart recommends using 1 tablespoon of ground coffee per cup, but use more or less to suit your taste. Note: the maximum capacity for ground coffee is 15 tablespoons for the 12-cup coffeemaker. Exceeding this amount may cause overflow if the coffee is too finely ground.

Features and Benefits

    DCC-1200 Controls
    LCD & Controls
  1. Reservoir Cover: Flips back for easy filling.
  2. Water Reservoir: When filling the coffeemaker with water, refer to the carafe height markings and fill to the desired number of cups. Be sure to add a small amount of extra water to account for the amount of water lost in wetting the grounds and lost as steam during the brewing process.
  3. Showerhead: Distributes water evenly over coffee, reducing temperature loss as water passes through grounds.
  4. Water Filter: Charcoal water filter eliminates chlorine, calcium and bad tastes or odors from tap water. Cuisinart recommends changing the water filter every 60 days or 60 uses ‒ or more often if you have hard water.
  5. Filter Basket: Holds a #4 paper filter or a permanent filter.
  6. LCD Digital Clock: Displays the time of day and set time for automatic functions.
  7. Function Knob and Flip Switch: Used to initiate programming of automatic functions.
  8. The Auto On feature is used to program the start time of the brew cycle. The Auto On can be set for any time, day or night. The PM indicator is displayed on the LCD for nighttime program times. The Auto Off feature is used to shut off the coffeemaker at a preset time, anywhere from 0 to 4 hours. Note: To program the coffeemaker to shut off automatically, read the instructions included in the Instruction Manual under 'To program the Variable Auto Off'
    1. Heater Plate Control Knob: For controlling the temperature of the coffee after brewing. There are three temperature settings high, medium and low.
    2. 1-4 Cup Setting: The 1-4 cup setting button is used when you make small amounts of coffee. Normal coffeemakers will produce a colder batch of coffee when smaller amounts are made, because the heater doesn’t have enough time to properly ‘warm up’ to heat a small amount. The 1-4 setting basically ‘double heats’ the water, making your smaller amounts as piping hot as a full pot would be. To use simply press the 1-4 button on the control panel after turning on the unit.
    3. Retro-style flip switch is used to turn your coffeemaker on and off and works in tandem with the function knob.
  9. Clean Setting: Tells you when it’s time to clean your coffeemaker. Remove built-up calcification from the water reservoir, to help extend the life of your coffeemaker.
  10. Brew Pause: Stops flow of coffee from basket when carafe is removed (30 seconds max) from the heater plate, so a cup can be poured in mid-brew. Since the flavor extraction rate varies during the brew cycle, we recommend allowing the brewing cycle to finish before pouring the coffee. The coffee brewed at the beginning of the cycle has a flavor profile which is very different from the flavor at the end of the cycle. Once the coffee has finished brewing, stir it before serving to blend the flavors. The coffee at the bottom of the carafe will be somewhat stronger than the coffee at the top.
  11. Carafe: The easy pour, no drip glass carafe has an ergonomic handle and brewed coffee markings for two to twelve cups.
  12. Heating Plate: Scratch resistant with black, nonstick coating.
  13. Ready Tone: Signals the end of the brew cycle with five beeps (coffee will continue to stream from the filter for a few seconds after the tone).

Percolator Coffee Pot

The percolator coffee pot has come a long way from the days of cowboys and campfires. In 1886 the non electric percolator came to America and changed the way the drink was brewed. The early pots were nothing more than a simple pot into which water was poured, followed by an unmeasured amount of coffee. The water boiled and the concoction brewed with it, until a guesstimate was made as to whether it was ready or not.

Coffee Pot

The percolator coffee pots of 1886 were organized to brew a drink that would be served without the heavy oils that lingered around inside the old ones.

Coffee Pot

This new gadget had components that were aids in preparing a good tasty drink. Those components were: a basket into which the grounds were measured; a stem on which the basket sat; this stem operated gravitationally to bring water to the grounds; and a clear glass bulb like device through which you could see the color of the liquid as it brewed. The liquid was filtered as the water flowed through it and after a short time it was ready to be served.

In spite of the host of new appliances on offer today, the more traditional items are still in demand with many housewives and campers. Modernization of the kitchen has given us color to our kitchenware. No longer are they just the old boring colors they once were.

Although the design of the percolator coffee pot has not changed much over the years, other innovations have entered the picture to give us alternative choices. We now have; French Press, vacuum, drip, and electric percolators and many others besides.

Presto 02811 12-Cup Stainless Steel Coffeemaker Specifications

One of the most comforting sounds in the world is the bubbling of a coffee percolator at work. And then comes the toasty aroma--it makes for a perfect morning. Percolators have come back to home kitchens, and the Presto 12-cup stainless steel coffee maker is a prime example. Its elegant, hotel-style design brings a touch of luxury to what is for many a daily pleasure.

This coffee maker brews up to twelve cups of coffee at a cup-a-minute rate, which it then keeps at a constant, piping-hot serving temperature. An indicator light in the base announces when the coffee is ready. The inner fixtures--the filter basket and perk tube--are also made of stainless steel, rather than the more common (and less durable) aluminum. The power cord is removable to make storage simple.

Before cleaning the coffee maker, unplug the unit and allow it to cool completely. Wash the coffee maker with warm, sudsy water and dry it thoroughly; it is not immersible. To preserve the gloss of the stainless steel, do not use steel wool or harsh, abrasive cleansers. The perk spout and filter basket can be cleaned with a brush or pipe cleaner. If necessary, coffee stain remover can be used periodically on the interior surface. The coffee maker measures 10 by 5 by 13 inches (including handle, lid, and spout). Presto guarantees this product with a one-year limited warranty. A simple instruction sheet is enclosed. --Garland Withers

Coffee - Using Vinegar to Clean Your Coffee Pot, What You Should Know

When was the last time you cleaned your coffeemaker?

Coffee Pot

Like anything else, coffee makers require cleaning from time to time. Over time, lime deposits and "gunk" build inside your coffee equipment. Coffee oils can accumulate inside the coffee machine and become rancid. This will damage the taste of coffee. Mineral deposits can form inside the coffee maker as either lime scale or mineral scale. In general, scale reduces the efficiency of the coffee maker's heating unit as well as the water flow. The coffee aftertaste changes to somewhat bitter and dirty. If this is happening to you, it is time to make your coffeepot clean again!

Coffee Pot

Coffee equipment should be cleaned at least once a month. Clean your coffee machine more often than that to ensure the best tasting coffee if you are a heavy coffee drinker. Other factors, such as the type and quality of water you use in your coffee machine also influence the cleaning frequency to use.

Most coffee makers have cleaning instructions included in the owner manual that you can follow. However, most people misplace or do not keep the owner's manual for small and mid size appliances. You can spend money on a cleaning kit or you can use a very effective and inexpensive home made cleaning solution. The following cleaning method works very well.

Steps to cleaning your coffee pot,

Put a filter into the filter basket unless your coffee equipment does not use paper filters. Pour an entire jar of white vinegar into the pour spot where you usually pour the water. Some people will add lemon juice to the vinegar which is fine. Others prefer to use a combination of half water and half white vinegar. Any of these combinations work. The decision is based on how dirty the coffee maker is and how often it has been cleaned. Turn your coffee maker "on" or use the "clean setting" if your equipment has one. Make sure all the vinegar drops down into the coffee pot recipient. When finished, discard it. The vinegar will deodorize your kitchen sink drain, which is a nice side benefit. Run two full pots of water through to make sure you flush out all traces of vinegar before brewing coffee again. Let the coffee equipment cool each time for about 10 minutes. Remember to wipe down the outside and all around the coffee maker very well to give it a shiny clean look and remove any traces of dirt. One area that is usually very dirty and sticky is where the coffee drips out of the machine into the pot. It's similar to cleaning the inside ceiling of your microwave. Cleaning every single crevice of the coffee machine is essential to preventing mold build up in the piping and the filter basket. Wash the coffee carafe (glass container) inside and out very well with soapy hot water. Lime deposits form inside the carafe and can affect the coffee taste. If you have stains or burned coffee spots on the carafe, pour some table salt on them and let them stand for at least a half hour or overnight. You can add some water with vinegar and soak overnight. Depending upon how stubborn and crusty the stains or burn marks are, this step may need repetition. It will remove any "coffee film" inside. Check the coffee equipment to see if the smell of vinegar persists in the equipment. If it does, run more water through the coffee maker. Vinegar cleans the coffee pot and flushes out any buildup in the tank and tubes.

Good coffee starts with good beans and with a clean coffee maker. A coffee maker is easy to clean. On a daily basis, after each coffee brewing, you should remove all the parts that can be removed and wash them in hot soapy water. Use a damp soft towel or sponge all surfaces of the coffee equipment.

A clean coffee machine will make better tasting coffee. Your reward will be a delicious, clean, aromatic and great cup. What can be better than that for a coffee lover?

Let's drink some Papua New Guinea AA Estate!
